GP Bullhound reveals the winners of the Northern Tech Awards 2016

Ontrac crowned fastest-growing Northern tech company

The fastest growing technology companies in the North of England and Scotland have been recognised last night at the Northern Tech Awards 2016.

GP Bullhound, the technology investment bank, made awards to eight outstanding tech companies at a prestigious ceremony at Liverpool’s Titanic Hotel.

Skyscanner, the technology travel brand, was awarded the prestigious Overall Judges’ Award, demonstrating outstanding levels of innovation, leadership and international reach.

The winners were selected by a panel of high-profile judges, including David Rowan, Editor of Wired, Sir Terry Leahy, Sherry Coutu, and Alex Baldock, CEO of Shop Direct. The final ranking for the top 50 fastest-growing northern tech firms was also revealed.

The annual Northern Tech Awards identify the fastest-growing tech companies in the North of England and Scotland, showcasing the impact of digital talent across the region and highlighting its growing international importance.

With the 50 fastest-growing companies increasing their combined revenues by 90% in 2015, the awards celebrated the continued expansion of the Northern digital economy. This list includes Skyscanner, Sky Betting and Gaming and Missguided, and the start of 2016 has seen two more northern tech companies reach billion-dollar valuations and achieve ‘unicorn’ status.

Recognised as a shining example of this growth trend, ‘Fastest Growing Company’ went to Ontrac, the IT solutions company based in Gateshead.

Other winners included The LADBible, which won the Young Entrepreneur Award.

Hugh Campbell, Managing Partner of GP Bullhound, commented: “The caliber of the companies profiled this evening is astonishing. The Northern Tech Awards recognise the companies driving momentum in Northern tech, the firms with true ambition, scaling at speed. Never before have we had such a wealth of technology talent on our doorstep. It has not been an easy job adjudicating the entries, but our judging panel has succeeded in picking out the most promising northern digital businesses.”

Herb Kim, Executive Chair of Tech North, commented: “The spectacular rate of growth that these companies have demonstrated in recent years is testament to the rapid acceleration of the North’s digital economy. These are the leading lights, but with 80 per cent of all tech firms now based outside of London, they represent the wider opportunity for growth and innovation across the UK.”

The event brought together the leading figures from the technology sector of the North, from founders of high-growth digital businesses. David Rowan, Editor of Wired, gave the keynote speech, and the evening featured an on-stage interview of Bonamy Grimes, co-founder of Skyscanner.

The annual event is organised by GP Bullhound, the technology investment bank. The Northern Tech Awards 2016 are supported and sponsored by Barclays Bank, Squire Patton Boggs, William Currie Group, Shop Direct, Berenberg, Business Growth Fund, Enterprise Ventures, Frazer John Recruitment, Inflexion, Liverpool Vision, London Stock Exchange, Scottish Equity Partners and Tech North.
